    Unsettled start in life  

    Ben* came to us when he was 13 years old after his previous home and foster care placements broke down. 

    He was initially diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder) and traits of autism. He struggled to regulate his emotions, and his behaviour suffered as a result.  

    The great outdoors  

    Ben initially took a short-term placement at one of our assessment homes, where he took part in an AQA outdoor activity course. He participated in numerous outdoor pursuits, which included trips to Go Ape, go-carting, and a national park. 

    After 16 weeks, Ben was ready to transition to one of our full-time homes, where he settled in quickly.  

    "My transition was really good. My carer here visited me lots of times when I was at the assessment home, so I got to know him quite well before I arrived. I felt like things really clicked for me here. I went out on many walks around the local area with two other carers so I could get used to everywhere around me, and that helped, too."

    Rediscovering the joy of learning 

    Previously, Ben's education had broken down during years 8 and 9, so we enrolled him on the Turning the Curve™ education model at one of our day schools to re-engage him with learning. 

    The school reviewed his EHCP (education, health, and care plan) and supported him through his GCSEs. He also went on numerous trips to the Silverstone racetrack to fuel his interest in Formula One racing. 

    Focused on his future 

    Ben has been offered a place at a local college where he'll study public services, which he's really interested in.  

    It’s a big achievement for Ben and one that would have seemed out of reach for him when we first met.  

    However, with the high level of support that he’s received from our home staff and the school, he’s now settled and ready for the next step in his education.  

    He's also become a popular and committed member of the cadets for the local Fire Rescue, Police and Ambulance service, which he attends every week.  

    His long-term goal is to become a firefighter or a policeman to help serve his community and he’ll also be starting driving lessons soon.  

    "At times, going through everything could feel quite daunting, but it's felt like a positive experience, too. Being here definitely feels like home. I now know what I want to achieve."
